Local traveling? New kind of tourism hits Indonesia ..

During conversations among travelers, it immediately becomes clear that everyone is looking for authentic travel experiences. The real experience is about “going where the locals go, eating what the locals eat and doing what the locals do”. Difficulties with finding these things in your touristic information booklet? It will be much easier if you have local friends who are eager to show you their community.

Well, good news on the travel front. There is a new kid in town ready to give you the authentic local experience! Withlocals is a platform where locals and tourists are connected through food and experiences. Locals can offer tours, workshops and even home dinner experiences directly to tourists. How amazing would it be if you could take a side-street off the beaten tourist track, and knock on a local’s front door? Imagine having a typical Indonesian home dinner together with a local family, or learning how to prepare your own Sate Padang. The idea is simple, travelers can taste the real food for a cheaper price and get a chance to see the culture of the locals up-close. The hosts can set up their own prices and make new friends all over the world by simply using skills they already have, such as preparing authentic homemade meals.

Apart from delicious home dinner restaurants, locals can also decide to take tourists along on a tour or activity. After all, locals are the experts of their community. Teach a tourist to drive a Tuk Tuk, play badminton like a local, make your own batik or carve beautiful figures out of fruit.

Withlocals will kick off in Indonesia. After this, the organization will expand to other countries in Asia. Got excited? If you want to become a host and take part in the mission to redesign the tourism industry, visit the website of Withlocals and subscribe for the first launch in September!

The Golden Mount, Thailand

You can completely disagree with my opinion, but I do like Khao San Road area. I know it’s very touristic, but c’mon…I’m talking about the good street food, bars, yes tourists oohh tourists, those small streets and local people that eventually became a very interesting objects photography.  Plus, it takes just couple of minutes walk-distance to see the Democracy Monument, Phra Sumen Fort, Phra Atit road, Santichaiprakarn park ( well nothing really special with the park, but I loved just hanging out there, people watching…you know when you get to see what’s around you just like a mini sitcom on television ), and The Golden Mount…So yeah, Khao San Road is not that bad overall.
My second day in Khao San Road, I woke up around 6.00 am. The rooftop pool in D&D Inn was closed and the restaurant served breakfast at 8.30 am, got no choice, I decided to walk around the neighborhood. Gotta explore this place before moving to the city centre this afternoon to see my special people. Good to see Khao San Road street was empty for a while, since I didn’t have any Bangkok map with me - I just ended up walking with no direction. The street signs led me to Phra Atit Road, Santichaiprakarn park, then Phra Arthit pier where you can take the Chao Praya Express Boat to see Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun and the city centre. Walking back to Khao San Road, I continued my morning walk to Democracy Monument  then The Golden Mount.
Located in  344 Avenue Road Emperor Pong Ban Bat. Pom Prap Sattru Phai district, Wat Saket or The Golden Mount opens everyday from 9 am to 5.30 pm, with admission fee THB20. Pretty nice panorama of Rattanakosin from the top of the Golden Mount, was well worth a visit :)

One Of My Simple Joys...

Sunrise from Punthuk Sitempu, Borobudur Temple.

I fell in love with this man when I saw him in Punthuk Sitempu, Magelang – Yogyakarta. It was 4.30 am, super hot, we walked quite far up to the hill just to get some perfect shots of sunrise and Borobudur Temple. First time to Punthuk Sitempu ( Close to Borobudur temple, I guess the best way to get there – you should ask the local people or hire motorcycle taxi )  I was surprised to see hundreds of photographers, from amateurs to the very professional – they all seemed ready with smart phones, cameras and tripods. We have one mission here : sunrise, what else ?
My friend next to me was busy with his camera. Just like everybody else here, he looked so excited to see the sunrise. I decided to keep the Nikon DSLR camera inside the bag and just using Iphone, very simple. In my head, coffee..coffee...I need coffee. Saw a lady with a plastic cup of coffee standing not so far from me, hmm where did she get that black coffee ? But then my eyes caught this old man sitting at the wooden bench, just behind her. He was wearing cool t-shirt, peci in his head, grey hair, tan skin, wrinkles, smiling to people in front of him. He’s definitely a local guy. Then he grabbed a plastic of tobacco and paper from his pocket, he rolled them and light a match then started to enjoy his cigarette. Instead of taking photos of the sun, I took photo of him. Forget about the sunrise, this guy got my attention. It was the way he looked at people, the way he giggled, the way he stare at the golden light came up from behind the mountain...the sunrise's like a new hope, new start, yes another day to live. He looked incredibly happy to start his day in this place, with his tobacco and all these tourists. Simple joy, aye ?
Here, far away from home - an old man, sunrise, people and breathtaking view of Borobudur Temple, already made my day, even though it was too early to say that well, I had a good day.

Good morning ! Rise and shine from Punthuk Sitempu

Chatuchak Market

Mango Sticky Rice and Mango Smoothies at Chatuchak
fruit stalls

I’m not really a big fan of shopping when I travel overseas but this world’s largest weekend market in Bangkok that covers area of 30 acres divided into more than 20 sections and definitely more than 10.000 booths selling not only food and drinks, but also antiques, books, clothes, ceramics, fruits, home décor and many more – was super worth to visit. Chatuchak Market opens every Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 6pm. Only 5 minutes walk from Mo Chit BTS Station, you can find the best local products from every part of Thailand in this market.

Make sure to stock up on cash before you get lost on this shoppers paradise, get the maps of Chatuchak Market to help you understand better every sections – since the market is really big, a little not well organized but still an excellent and authentic place to hunt Thai handicrafts, vintage dresses, cute shorts for only THB69, and oh my favorite one : Mango sticky rice and coconut water !! I didn’t buy anything but mango sticky rice, mango smoothie and coconut water. Simply happy just sitting in one of the fruit stall, having a small plate of mango while looking at tourists trying to bargain, how some Thai girls looking absolutely chic and stylish wearing colorful dresses and of course they go crazy hunting for clothes in the market, local people standing in front of their booth, even this hilarious big Mexican guy cooking and singing – was very entertaining in the middle of hot Sunday afternoon.

Happy Birthday Gyscha !

Seriously, what a girl really wants for her 24th birthday ? Shoes, bags, dress ? Nah, not really, I actually got crazy when Tiger Airways had promo buy 1 for 2, such a sweet deal for travel lovers, really. I love the idea about birthday trip, buy yourself a little present like booking tickets to some places, just away from your daily routines, meet people, celebrating life and love. Check AirAsia and Tiger Airways, they have lots of promo - which for me, that kind of sale just more interesting than normal shoes or dress summer sale.  While last year I spent 2 weeks on a birthday trip to Vietnam, Cambodia and Bali, this year I decided to escape for 4 days to Bangkok. Ricil, my friend who supposed to travel with me to Bangkok lost her passport exactly 10 hours before we departed, so yeah I flew to Bangkok all by myself. Glad to catch up with Yasmin and Azzam, they threw me a party, from our amazing hotel Mode Sathorn Hotel in Surasak area to a unique bar with classic Chinese ambiance in Novotel hotel, then moved to Q Bar, then moved again to this bar in Shangrila which I couldn't remember the name. How sweet two of them made sure the birthday girl had good times. The next day I ran into a sweet Thai lady just behind Mode Sathorn Hotel who owns beauty salon and she gave me discounts as a lil birthday present to do my hair. She said "because a birthday girl deserves to look perfect in her big day." She was sooo right, a birthday girl deserves a perfect hair in her big day, well if only I could bring her with me everywhere to do my hair :p
Back home,  my  boo  gave me CAT COSTUME which I had to wear that during the dinner and people were free to give me hugs and kisses. Plus big sushi treats, cake, movie night       ( oooh I love Monster University, that little Wazowski has a big spirit like me haha ) and...umm another birthday cake and dress from my beloved colleagues at work. Lucky girl I am !
To all my special people out there, thank you for all the love and always being supportive, it's amazing how all of you always believe in me, believe in my dreams. and thank you to million readers who stop by in this blog, I might not the best writer or blogger, but happy to share my travel experiences with you ;)
Even though nothing special with age number 24, but this year I want to spread my wings, try and experience more new things, Australia trip soooon, then Thailand again, I wanna keep doing what I love, stay happy, crazy and energetic as I am today or couple or years ago.
